U.S. appeals court temporarily reinstates Trump tariffs

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit on Thursday temporarily suspended a ruling on tariffs imposed by the administration of Donald Trump, effectively reinstating them.

The corresponding administrative stay was published on the court’s website.

The U.S. Appeals Court ruling states that the plaintiffs challenging the tariffs must submit their arguments regarding the stay by June 5. The U.S. government will be able to submit its response by June 9, after which the appeals court may extend the suspension of the tariff ruling.

Previously, the U.S. Court of International Trade had ruled that Trump exceeded his authority by imposing broad tariffs and had suspended them. That decision also prevented Trump from applying tariffs introduced earlier this year against China, Mexico, and Canada, which were aimed at combating fentanyl entering the U.S.

The appeals court’s order means the tariffs are once again in effect.
