A routine train journey turned into a nightmare in western Russia on Sunday after an explosion caused a bridge to collapse onto a moving passenger train in Bryansk region, leaving at least four people dead and dozens more injured.
The Moscow-bound train was passing beneath the overpass when the structure suddenly gave way, crushing part of the train below. Russian Railways (RZD) officials suspect foul play may have been involved, citing possible “illegal interference” in transport operations. Meanwhile, local media outlet Izvestia reported that regional health authorities had linked the collapse to an explosion.
As of late Sunday, the full extent of the casualties remained unclear. One source told RT that the number of injured could exceed 40. Bryansk Governor Alexander Bogomaz hasn’t released official figures yet but assured the public that emergency teams are working around the clock to assist victims.
Shocking video clips circulating on Telegram show chaotic scenes: twisted train carriages, panicked passengers climbing out through broken windows, and first responders racing to evacuate the wounded. Reports also suggest that vehicles on the overpass were sent tumbling onto the train during the collapse.
Russia’s Ministry of Emergency Situations (MChS) confirmed that firefighting and rescue units were deployed swiftly to the disaster site. In a statement, the ministry said extra rescue equipment, emergency lighting, and reinforcements have been sent in to support overnight operations.
While investigators continue to piece together what triggered the deadly incident, officials are treating the situation with the utmost urgency. For now, the region remains on high alert as authorities seek answers — and accountability.
