Mass unrest broke out in France on the night of June 2 following celebrations of Paris Saint-Germain’s victory in the UEFA Champions League final.
According to Paris police, 323 people were detained in total, including 79 during the night from Sunday to Monday. Most of those detained remain in custody.
Paris police chief Laurent Nuñez, speaking to BFMTV, described the scale of the arrests as unprecedented. The disturbances occurred in several areas, including near the Parc des Princes stadium and along the Champs-Élysées. Arrests were made for carrying prohibited weapons, using flares, assaulting police officers, verbal abuse, and disturbing public order.
The final between PSG and Inter Milan took place in Munich, but around 48,000 fans gathered at PSG’s home stadium in Paris to watch the match on a big screen. According to France’s Ministry of the Interior, two people died during the unrest, and the total number of those detained has reached 559.
