NATO calls on Europe to increase ground-based air defense forces fivefold

The North Atlantic Alliance has called on its European member states to significantly boost their ground-based air defense capabilities — by as much as five times the current level, Bloomberg reports, citing informed sources.

This issue is expected to be one of the main topics at the upcoming meeting of NATO defense ministers, scheduled for Thursday in Brussels. According to the sources, the initiative aims to address a critical gap in the alliance’s defense system, driven by the need to respond to the perceived threat of “Russian aggression.”

One unnamed NATO official explained that over the past three decades, the alliance has scaled back such systems in Europe, having shifted its focus after the Cold War to threats originating from the Middle East and North Africa.
