On Wednesday, the European Commission will present a new proposal regarding temporary protection for Ukrainians currently residing in the EU.
EU member states are set to decide whether to invest more in the integration of Ukrainian refugees or to begin preparing for their eventual return, if and when conditions allow.
The European Commission is currently evaluating the legal framework for the temporary protection of Ukrainians, and a new proposal is expected today.
At stake is the future of 4.26 million Ukrainians who are under the EU’s Temporary Protection Directive (TPD) as of March 2025. Brussels first activated the directive in 2022 after Russia’s full-scale invasion triggered the largest refugee crisis in Europe since World War II.
Across the EU, Ukrainians were granted swift access to housing, employment, education, and healthcare. Moldova and other neighboring countries followed suit.
