Germany’s population hits another record high – thanks to migration

Despite the number of deaths exceeding the number of births, Germany’s population continues to grow — thanks to migration. This was reported by Welt, citing data from Germany’s Federal Statistical Office.

As of the end of 2024, the country’s population stood at nearly 83.6 million people, the highest figure ever recorded. Compared to 2023, this marks an increase of 0.1%, or 121,000 people.

The main driver of growth is the influx of foreign nationals. According to the report, the number of foreigners living in Germany increased by 283,000, or 2.3%. Their share of the total population rose from 14.5% at the end of 2023 to 14.8% by the end of 2024.

The largest foreign communities in Germany remain:

Turks — about 1.4 million,
Ukrainians — nearly 1.1 million,
Syrians — around 890,000.

At the same time, natural population growth in Germany was once again negative — in 2024, deaths outnumbered births by 330,000.

The year before, in 2023, Germany’s population grew by 300,000, reaching 84.7 million — also due to migration, which offset the country’s low birth rate and aging population.

Overall, statisticians note that Germany’s population is now significantly older than it was 70 years ago, continuing to pose demographic challenges for the country.
