Romanian authorities evacuate residents after sulfuric acid leak

A sulfuric acid leak from a road tanker near Comarnic, Prahova County, prompted an emergency response as authorities worked to contain the hazardous spill.

The incident occurred on Monday morning when a faulty valve caused the chemical to escape from the tanker. In response, emergency crews evacuated 28 people, including six minors, from homes within a 100-meter radius of the spill site and up to 500 meters downwind.

Residents were alerted through the RO-ALERT system and advised to remain indoors, seal openings, and turn off air circulation systems.

As a precaution, traffic on the DN 1 highway was temporarily suspended. Police urged drivers to stay vigilant, adjust their speed, and follow official instructions.

To mitigate further risks, a second tanker was brought in to transfer the remaining sulfuric acid, while authorities constructed a sand barrier to absorb any additional leakage.
