Nuremberg introduces gun ban zone around main train station

The authorities in Nuremberg have announced the creation of a weapons ban zone around the city’s main train station, prohibiting the carrying of weapons and knives in the area.

Mayor Marcus König stated that the measure is aimed at improving safety in one of the city’s most crime-prone areas. “Weapons and knives have no place in this district,” König emphasized. He noted that now that local governments have been granted the authority to establish such zones, the city is using this tool to enhance crime prevention efforts. The area had already been designated an alcohol-free zone.

Nuremberg’s central train station and the adjacent Königstorpassage serve more than 130,000 travelers daily, making it one of the busiest locations in the city. The area surrounding the station has long been a focus of police operations. According to a statement from city officials, temporary weapons bans imposed by federal police in 2023 and 2024 have proven effective in preventing violence. Last year, similar restrictions were implemented at several major train stations in Bavaria, including during the European Football Championship and the pre-Christmas season.

Data from 2022 shows that Nuremberg’s main station ranked among the most dangerous in Germany—alongside Hamburg and Hanover—particularly in terms of violent, sexual, and property-related crimes.
