George Simion, the firebrand leader of Romania’s nationalist Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), has slammed French President Emmanuel Macron for what he calls blatant interference in Romania’s democratic process. Just ahead of the decisive presidential vote, Simion didn’t mince words during a televised interview on France’s CNews: “I don’t respect Emmanuel Macron’s intervention in our democracy.”
Though he expressed deep admiration for the French people themselves, Simion accused France’s ambassador of actively campaigning against him. According to the AUR leader, the ambassador has been crisscrossing Romania, urging local business elites to back his political rival—Bucharest’s current mayor. That’s not diplomacy, Simion argued—it’s manipulation.
Even more concerning, he claimed, was a behind-closed-doors conversation between the same ambassador and Romania’s Constitutional Court president, allegedly discussing the potential annulment of next year’s elections. “It’s outrageous,” Simion said, pointing to Brussels’ involvement as part of the same anti-sovereignty agenda.
Turning his focus back to France, Simion didn’t hold back. “You’ve lost your identity,” he told French viewers. “It’s time to return to your roots—stop mutilating children through gender surgeries. You’re destroying yourselves. France, as a Christian, European nation, is fading away.”
Despite fierce opposition from EU bureaucrats and leftist circles—over his populist views, conservative stance on gender ideology, and refusal to toe the Ukraine line—Simion remains a formidable contender in Romania’s upcoming presidential race. With a growing wave of support from voters tired of foreign meddling and globalist pressure, he’s not backing down.
