On Monday, May 19, activists from the environmental movement “Last Generation” staged a protest at the campaign headquarters of Warsaw’s mayor, Rafał Trzaskowski — the winner of the first round of the presidential elections in Poland. Some protesters remained inside the building, while others gathered outside the entrance.
According to the Onet portal, the activists are demanding an immediate meeting with Trzaskowski and his public support for their demands to develop affordable public transportation. In particular, they insist on reallocating state funding from highways to regional transport and introducing a unified monthly ticket costing 50 zlotys for travel in villages and small towns.
The “Last Generation” movement has been blocking bridges in Warsaw for two weeks, demanding concrete government action to combat the climate crisis. For example, on May 5, the day Polish schoolchildren took their written Polish language exam, they blocked several key bridges in the capital.
