Iranian consulates in Hamburg, Munich, and Frankfurt have officially been closed to visitors since the beginning of the week.
At the same time, the Iranian Embassy in Berlin will remain open and continue to provide consular services for the 300,000 Iranians living in Germany.
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock ordered the closure of Iran’s consulates in response to the execution of Jamshid Sharmahd, a German-Iranian citizen. Iran announced Sharmahd’s execution on October 28. He had been sentenced to death in the spring of 2023 following a contentious trial on terrorism charges.
The German government, along with Sharmahd’s relatives and human rights activists, strongly rejected the charges against him.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Baerbock expressed outrage over the execution, while Friedrich Merz, the leader of the opposition CDU, called for the expulsion of the Iranian ambassador.
On October 29, Germany summoned the Iranian ambassador and recalled its own ambassador from Tehran for consultations.
