Polish farmers took to the streets of various cities to protest against the trade agreement between the European Union and South American countries (Mercosur), as well as against the increased influence of animal rights organizations.
The demonstrators demand that the government block the Mercosur agreement and halt the implementation of the “Green Deal.” The largest protest was held in the city of Elbląg. One of the organizers described the protest as a warning.
If the government does not take action to block the Mercosur agreement, all unions and farming groups will unite, and our protest will be much larger, he emphasized.
Over 50 tractors decorated with red and white Polish flags gathered in the suburb of Kazimierzów. Many vehicles displayed banners with slogans such as “Mercosur is the death of Polish agriculture.”
Earlier, on November 23, Polish farmers launched a protest in Medyka near the border with Ukraine. They expressed dissatisfaction with maintaining the current level of agricultural tax for 2024 and concerns over the EU’s plan to sign a free trade agreement with South American countries under Mercosur.
The protest was temporarily suspended until December 10, but farmers warned that if their demands are not met, they will expand their actions to block the entire eastern border.
