Thailand moves towards BRICS membership

The Thai Cabinet has approved a decision to accept an invitation extended during the BRICS summit in October, Bangkok Post reports.

Membership could be finalized as early as June. Bangkok believes that joining the organization, led by Russia and China, will boost its trade, investments, food security, and energy security. Additionally, it is expected to “enhance Thailand’s role in promoting international cooperation and multilateralism.”

Currently, Thailand is one of the 13 partner countries of BRICS. This status allows participation in the organization’s dialogues and projects but does not grant voting rights in key decision-making processes. Full membership would enable Bangkok to take part in shaping the future economic and political systems of developing nations.

The organization, established in 2006, aims to strengthen cooperation among emerging economies and promote a multipolar world. Over recent years, BRICS has expanded its influence, actively advocating for reforms in international institutions and developing alternative financial mechanisms.
