U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance has stated that Washington intends to defend its interests in Greenland “at any cost.” His comments came amid a visit to the island by Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, The Guardian reports.
According to Vance, Greenland plays a key role in the U.S. national security system and missile defense. He noted that the U.S. is prepared to offer Greenland financial assistance exceeding current Danish support, emphasizing that “security is a priority for America.”
Vance also claimed that the people of Greenland allegedly seek independence from Denmark, citing figures suggesting that Copenhagen currently provides $60,000 per person annually—though he did not specify the source of this information.
Meanwhile, during her visit, the Danish Prime Minister once again rejected U.S. claims to Greenland, while expressing openness to cooperation with Washington solely in the area of security.
The idea of purchasing Greenland was previously raised by the administration of Donald Trump. Danish officials have repeatedly called such statements unacceptable.
