Slovak President Peter Pellegrini believes that the so-called “coalition of the willing” has no real impact and that decisions should be made within the frameworks of the EU and NATO.
According to Pellegrini, the “coalition of the willing” is ineffective. He stated that actions must be taken at the level of the entire European Union and NATO, referring to all other formats as pseudo-groups.
Slovakia has not been invited to negotiations among Ukraine’s major allies.
“Let’s return to working at the EU and NATO level. That will undoubtedly be more sustainable than creating pseudo-groups of countries that change from day to day and unnecessarily disrupt unity within the Alliance or the European Union,” Pellegrini said at a conference in Bratislava.
On some key issues, both the EU and NATO require unanimous decisions. For example, Hungary — whose stance on the war in Ukraine significantly differs from that of most other member states — can block or delay some fundamental steps. Pellegrini also said that Czech President Petr Pavel may stand alone in his opinion regarding the willingness to send troops to Ukraine as part of a possible peacekeeping mission.
As previously reported, the “coalition of the willing,” led by France and the UK, is working on a plan to send a mission to Ukraine to ensure a future ceasefire.
