A 65-year-old man in the UK has been arrested in connection with a series of disturbing letters sent to members of Parliament, according to British police.
Authorities in London say the suspect was taken into custody on April 9 under allegations of racially aggravated harassment and public order offenses. He has since been released on bail pending further investigation.
The arrest comes after five MPs reportedly received threatening messages between January and February. Police revealed that the letters “in addition to containing offensive content, appeared to be smeared with excrement.”
One MP, who spoke anonymously to Politico, described receiving a letter marked with what looked like bloodstains. It remains unclear whether this particular case is related to the ongoing probe.
As Politico highlights, UK lawmakers have increasingly reported threats and acts of aggression in recent years, raising concerns about their safety and the growing hostility in public discourse.
