Belgian investigators discovered approximately 4.78 tons of cocaine hidden in containers at the port of Antwerp. The find is part of an investigation led by the serious crimes unit of the Brussels prosecutor’s office.
According to the investigation, the illegal import of cocaine was orchestrated by a criminal organization operating through the port of Antwerp, facilitating the transportation of drug-filled containers for payment. The cocaine is believed to have been imported from South and Central America, as well as Canada.
In early November, police conducted a large-scale operation, carrying out 27 searches in Belgium and four in the Netherlands. The raids resulted in the seizure of vehicles, weapons, luxury goods, and around €185,000 in cash.
Eight individuals have been arrested in connection with the case and are facing charges of drug trafficking and participation in an organized criminal group, according to the Brussels prosecutor’s office.
In 2023, Belgian customs seized a record 116 tons of cocaine at the port of Antwerp, surpassing last year’s figures. Similar drug interceptions have occurred in other European countries. For instance, last week, Spanish authorities confiscated over 4 tons of cocaine from a fishing vessel located 800 kilometers west of the Canary Islands.
