China has signaled it is ready for trade talks with the U.S.

China’s Ministry of Commerce has officially confirmed that it is reviewing a U.S. proposal to discuss trade relations — marking the first public indication of Beijing’s potential openness to negotiations. The announcement was reported by CCTV.

On Friday, a ministry spokesperson told reporters that the U.S. had “recently, on its own initiative, sent signals to the Chinese side expressing a willingness to begin trade talks.” While the exact nature of those signals was not disclosed, Chinese officials stated that they are currently being “assessed.”

At the same time, Beijing reiterated its long-standing demands that Washington “demonstrate sincerity” and begin rolling back the additional unilateral tariffs it has imposed.

Nonetheless, the public statement by the Ministry of Commerce may reflect a growing readiness from China to reengage in dialogue.

Tensions between the world’s two largest economies have persisted since the onset of the trade war, during which both countries imposed reciprocal tariffs, some exceeding 100%. However, recent signs suggest both sides may now be open to mutual concessions.
